The First Circumnavigators

Timeline

In addition to using geomapping to organize and analyze our files, we decided to take it a step further and make a timeline of the dates provided by the documents. We took each of the dates mentioned in the documents and plotted the general years out onto this timeline. As an alternative to the map, we decided to again display quick summaries from the text to show the variation of tones and word usage based on the time spent on the voyage.

We thought it would be interesting to display the text this way because of how long the voyage was, and it would be interesting to see (if time permitted to add more information) all of the different deaths of the crew members, hardships, and events the crew went through while sailing around the globe. It is also intriguing to note the difference in language from the beginning of the voyage to the end, and can take you through the mind of a crewmember facing the difficulties of life at sea, especially during the 1500s.
